Moving with Pets? Here’s How to Make It a Smooth Transition

Moving day can be chaotic—and your pets feel it, too. Whether you’re relocating across town or to another state, your furry companions will pick up on the stress, changes, and unfamiliar surroundings. Preparing properly can make all the difference in helping them feel safe and secure during the move.

Understand the Stress Signals

Pets don’t understand the concept of “moving to a new house.” All they know is that their environment is shifting, their humans are busy, and boxes are piling up. Common signs of stress in pets include hiding, pacing, excessive barking or meowing, loss of appetite, or clinginess.

Keep routines as consistent as possible in the weeks leading up to your move. Feed, walk, and play with them at the same times each day. This consistency will provide a sense of normalcy even when things are changing around them.

Prep a Pet Essentials Kit

Just like you pack an overnight bag for yourself, prepare a travel bag for your pet. Include:

Food and water bowls

Medication

Favorite toys or blankets

Waste bags or litter box

Treats

Vet records and ID tags

This kit will be a lifesaver during moving day and in the first few days in your new home.

Choose a Safe Space on Moving Day

On moving day, keep your pet away from the chaos. Designate a quiet room or area where they can stay with their bed, water, and toys. This helps prevent them from escaping through open doors or getting underfoot.

If possible, have a friend or pet sitter look after them until the move is complete. For long-distance moves, consider pet-friendly hotel accommodations and frequent stops for breaks if driving.

Ease the Transition into the New Home

Once in the new home, let your pet explore one room at a time. Set up their food and water in the same layout as the previous home. Familiar scents—like unwashed bedding or toys—help them adjust faster.

Keep them indoors (or on a leash) for the first few days to prevent disorientation or attempts to return to the old home. Within a week, most pets begin to feel settled if given consistent attention and care.
